Saarinen-Miller Glass House
Larger than life comes to mind when describing the legend of architectural photography Balthazar Korab who died yesterday. Korab who emigrated from Hungary was a trained architect who took his “eye” to architectural photography after moving to Michigan to join Eero Saarinen’s studio in Bloomfield Hills Michigan. Korab’s love was best shown for mid-century modern architecture of which there is no shortage in Michigan.
Recently, a book on the Korab photographic legacy, “Balthazar Korab: Architect of Photography”, was published by the Princeton Architectural Press and was named a 2013 Michigan Notable Book award winner. His work is included in collections worldwide and his striking images of Michigan’s iconic building will live after him. I would suspect that a conference and exhibit on Michigan Modern being held June 10-16 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills will pay special tribute to him.
