The Red Fox Inn and other places Hemingway slept around at
Everyone wants a piece of Hemingway from Oak Park to Key West and from Ketchum to Northern Michigan. Michigan (both the upper and lower peninsulas) has as many Hemingway haunts as Key West has three toed kitties.
Some high points include the Horton Bay General Store, Windemere, the “Indian Camp”, and the Bacon Farm at Horton Bay and Walloon Lake, and The City Park Grill, the Penn Plaza Station and the Perry Hotel in Petoskey. There are also several sites in the Upper Peninsula which have historical significance. Click here for one of the most popular driving tours of Hemingway spots.
One particular spot in Horton Bay which recently received some attention was the Red Fox Inn. A folk art sign of a stretched out fox from the original Red Fox Inn was recently returned to its rightful owner. The sign had been purloined nearly 75 years ago and passed through numerous hands before its most recent owner decided to send it home. The sign is a couple feet long and is carved into the shape of a fox.
The sign, according to a news article in the Petoskey News Review, which you can read by clicking here, is home in time for the 100th Anniversary on the Inn next year. The Inn is now the home of a quirky bookstore dedicated to Hemingway. On the second floor is a unrestored “bed and breakfast”. This is a true Hemingway memorial where you can find one of a kind “limited edition” Hemingway writings along with one of a kind musings from the owner Jim Hartwell. He will be happy to point out where Hemingway was married and where he brought his boat ashore. A couple hours spent here is more fun than you will have in a lifetime of chasing Hemingway.
